so Mandy gets some goldfish. Been a while since we had a pet. Except, and using Shop Owner X here to avoid prosecution, some idiot of a petstore owner is giving fraudlent info out on fish.
We had two last week, Fish and Chips (her names), Chips died on Tuesday. The guy says it was a fungal infection and Mandy should get another fish and put some stuff in the tank. So he tells Mandy to get an Oranda, since they're cool and all that. Yeah, turns out Orandas are specialist fish that shouldnt be undertaken by novice aquariasts. How the hell can someone looking for her first fish be deemed anything other than a novice?
So, today Fish died. Without warning or anything, just gave up on life there and then having been swimming happily earlier. The cause could be
A) nitrate/ammonia poisoning, though the water is changed frequently. The guy in the PetStore said change it once a week. Even casual watching of the tank tells you otherwise in that regard.
B) water levels. One fish needs a gallon of surface water to live happily. Not a pair of fish as suggested by the petstore man. The expert got Mandy to invest in 2. 2 goldfish cannot live in one gallon of water, its not enough. And to make matters worse, when Chips died, he suggested putting in Little Naitch (the Oranda) with Fish, adding to the original problem as well as placing a specialist fish in the hands of a novice.
C) temperatures. God knows the temperatures in this house are carefully watched to take care of said pets, so if one thing is being done right its that.
So now we have 2 dead goldfish and a timid Oranda that just had an emergeancy water change done.
Do people really care more about the profits than the well being of the animals they are selling?

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you've had with your fish.
It's a shame that pet store employees either don't know enough, or don't care enough to tell people to properly take care of their fish.
Unfortunately, most of them don't so it's up to us to research everything before we buy to make sure that we get the right fish for the aquarium that we buy.
Then again, until you've bought a fish and had problems, you don't know that what the pet store employees are telling you is wrong.
